Former prime minister and current Conservative Party chairman Nadhim Zahawi is under increasing pressure after he recently reached a settlement with HM Revenue & Customs – reportedly estimated at £4.8m, including a 30% fine. Zahavi has so far declined to confirm that he paid such a fine, hoping to “solve some confusion about my finances”, with little success. Unexpectedly, the statement appeared to confirm that he was chancellor at a time when HMRC (the department he is responsible for) was investigating his personal tax affairs.
