Introverts reveal hybrid work leaves them feeling overwhelmed
Working in a hybrid environment? Chances are, you prefer to start your workweek from the office. That’s according to a recent survey of 2,002 employees, which found that 46 percent of hybrid workers would prefer to start their week at company headquarters, while only 20 percent prefer a comfy sofa. The results also found that Monday was the most productive day of the week (28%) regardless of where people worked, especially for self-described introverts (39%). A survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Canon USA, Inc. regarding the launch of AMLOS (Activate My Line Of Sight), an office solution for hybrid working, revealed the challenges employees may face when communicating with colleagues, and How these vary by personality type. Does Hybrid Working Help Improve Employee Communication Skills? Nearly two-thirds (65%) of those who divide their time between home and the office seem to think so, with more introverts than extroverts (82% vs. 62%). But while 88 percent of introverts say a hybrid work environment makes them feel like they can step out of their shell, they are also more likely than extroverts to find the work model overwhelming at times (80 percent versus 64 percent). Regardless of where they work, many introverts cite lack of feedback or communication as their biggest daily barrier (32%), while the biggest barrier for many extroverts is having too many communication channels (21%). Overall, nine in 10 employees find it difficult to speak up at work, a sentiment shared by nearly two-thirds when working remotely. The reason? Everyone speaks at the same time (47%), prefers visual or text-based communication (43%) and does not see their colleagues at the same time (40%). Video appears to be playing an integral role in streamlining co-worker interactions and increasing productivity. Eight in 10 (1,722 respondents) who turn on video at work say meetings are more productive when everyone else is on video. Many respondents also said they were able to better interact with colleagues (66%) and see everyone in the meeting (58%) when they could share documents, images and video in real time during the meeting. “As technology continues to evolve, employers need to keep employees engaged,” said Kohei Maeda, Director of Marketing, Canon America, Inc. “Video is part of the equation, but oftentimes there are complementary tools to help communicate effectively in real time” 10 out of 10 Seven (70%) of respondents agree that new technology tools such as apps and software can improve communication at work. “Companies should equip employees with technology that improves interactions and allows everyone to participate in meetings equally. When everyone is on the same page, no matter where they are, they not only feel like they are part of the team, but more ability to contribute,” Maeda added.
